The truth about heart disease and women

Although illness such as breast cancer is more commonly associated with women, heart disease is actually the #1 killer of women in the United States. Women are just as susceptible as men to the ravages of heart disease.

Heart disease is caused by narrowing and blockages of the coronary arteries. When the arteries become blocked they are incapable of supplying blood to the heart, which results in heart attack.

Women can reduce their risk of developing heart disease by doing cardio (aerobic) exercise for 30 minutes several times per week, maintaining a healthy weight, and not smoking. Diet is extremely important. Avoid foods high in saturated fat, cholesterol, and salt.

Consider purchasing a blood pressure monitor for home use for early detection if you think you're at risk.
